Germany will not send long-range Taurus missiles to Ukraine to prevent the war from escalating into a direct conflict between Russia and NATO, Chancellor Olaf Scholz said.

Chancellor Olaf Scholz said that Germany is not going to transfer long-range Taurus missiles because it could lead to a war between Russia and NATO. Also,  Germany will "carefully weigh"  every supply of weapons to Ukraine. He said this in an interview with the Märkische Allgemeine Zeitung, reports UNN

As Chancellor, I have to fulfill my responsibilities in matters of war and peace and security in Europe - and this also applies to the Taurus issue. Alongside our strong support for Ukraine, one thing remains important to me: we will do everything we can to prevent an escalation of the war - in other words, a war between Russia and NATO

- said Scholz.

He also indicated that Germany is not going to send its soldiers to Ukraine. And with each delivery of weapons, Germany "will carefully weigh what it means in this context."

"That is why I made the decision I did," Scholz added.

At the same time, he said, Germany supports Ukraine with weapons and ammunition more than any other country in Europe. According to Scholz, Germany has already spent more than 28 billion euros on military aid to Ukraine.

More than many other countries combined. And we will continue to do so as long as it is necessary. By doing so, we are showing Putin that he should not expect to be able to sit back and wait for everyone else to weaken their support.

Olaf Scholz also said that a number of countries, including Ukraine, are currently discussing at the level of security advisers what form a peace agreement could take .
