Former U.S. Senator Joe Lieberman of Connecticut, who almost won the Democratic nomination for vice president along with Al Gore in the 2000 election, and then almost became the vice presidential candidate eight years later, has died at the age of 82. Lieberman's death was announced in a statement by his family.
Lieberman has had one of the strangest careers in American politics. For a long time, he tended to remain on the right wing of the Democrats and was considered by many to be a moralist. He was the only Democrat to publicly criticize President Clinton's ethical behavior in the Lewinsky affair in the Senate, although the Clintons had once helped him during the election campaign.
Together with Al Gore (45th Vice President of the United States from 1993-2001; Nobel Peace Prize winner in 2007), Lieberman won the national popular vote, but both lost the Electoral College election after the Supreme Court ruled in favor of Republican candidate George W. Bush after a historic vote count in Florida.
In the following years, Joe Lieberman shocked his party by strongly defending the Republican president's wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.
After losing the Democratic primary for re-election in his home state of Connecticut in 2006, he left the party and ran as an independent, successfully regaining his seat thanks to the support of conservative voters. Lieberman left Congress in 2013.
