American group Liberty Media finalized an agreement on Monday to acquire the company that owns the rights to MotoGP, Dorna Sports. The MotoGP series was sold for 4.2 billion US dollars. This was reported by UNN with reference to Sky Sport.
Liberty Media Corp. said Monday it has agreed to acquire MotoGP World Championship rights holder Dorna Sports S.L. from Bridgepoint and the Canada Pension Plan Investment Board in a deal with an enterprise value of $4.5 billion (€4.2 billion).

Liberty Media owns Formula 1, an international racing championship for single-seater open-wheel cars.
MotoGP is the world's leading motorcycle racing circuit with a top speed of over 200 mph. The championship was launched in 1949, when it held six rounds across Europe.
In the 2024 season, the company will hold 17 races in 17 countries.

The acquisition, which gives Liberty Media Group control over Formula 1 and the MotoGP championship, may come under scrutiny from antitrust authorities.
Last week, the Financial Times reminded that the CVC Foundation, which once owned these two championships, was forced to sell the motorcycle championship in 2006 due to pressure from the European competition authority. It then purchased Formula One, which it transferred control of to Liberty Media in 2017. Liberty Media Corporation became the owner of Formula 1 for approximately eight billion dollars.
