The 29th Ukrainian Antarctic Expedition arrives at Akademik Vernadsky station
Kyiv • UNN
The 29th Ukrainian Antarctic Expedition replaced the previous expedition and delivered 50 tons of cargo and 140 tons of fuel for the next year on the Noosphere ship.
The change of annual expeditions has begun on the Vernadsky Research Base. On the night of March 21, the ship Noosphere delivered the 29th Ukrainian Antarctic Expedition to the station, which is to replace its colleagues. This was reported by the National Antarctic Research Center, UNN reports.
Details
It is noted that the icebreaker will be unloaded in the coming days. The polar explorers have to transport 50 tons of cargo and 140 tons of fuel to the shore for the next year of winter. Since the Noosphere cannot approach the station's berths due to the bottom topography, all this is transported by motorboats from Penola Strait, where the ship stopped, to Galindez Island, where Vernadsky is located.
A specialist of the 28th UAE is also registered and is transferring cases to the team of the 29th expedition.
While the Noosphere arrived at the station from Chile, the members of the seasonal team had already begun conducting the planned research in biology, geology and geophysics. Thus, the first samples of possible phytoplankton were collected for the international project to study the expansion of silicones in Antarctica. The work of the seasonal expedition will continue during the change of annual UAEs, as well as as the ship sails back to Chile. We will talk about the most interesting results separately.
AddendumAddendum
"The Noosphere, with the 29th UAE crew on board, set sail from the port of Punta Arenas to Antarctica on March 15. The ship reached the icy continent in less than a week.
