The earthquake was recorded at 04:24 local time. There were no reports of any malfunctions at the region's nuclear power plants.

The center of the earthquake was located in the northern part of Iwate Prefecture at a depth of about 71 kilometers. Initially, it was reported that the preliminary magnitude was 6.1 with an epicenter depth of 80 km.

No abnormalities were detected after the earthquake at the Onagawa and Higashidori nuclear power plants located in Miyagi and Aomori prefectures, respectively. The plants were offline during the earthquake.

Japan Nuclear Fuel Ltd. said the earthquake did not affect the operation of its processing plant in Rokkasho, Aomori Prefecture.

According to local firefighters, a 70-year-old woman in Hachinohe injured her left wrist after falling out of bed following the quake.
