Hungary approves suspension of arms reduction treaty in Europe

Hungary has suspended its participation in the Conventional Forces in Europe Treaty following a joint NATO statement after Russia suspended the treaty in 2023.
Hungary has approved the suspension of the implementation of a peace treaty that has been in force for several decades. It is the Treaty on Conventional Armed Forces in Europe and its supplementary documents, the Hungarian edition Hírklikk reports, UNN writes.
Details
After Russia terminated the treaty in 2023, a decision that came into force on November 7 of the same year, NATO member states issued a joint statement on November 7, 2023, announcing their intention to suspend the treaty.
"By suspending, Hungary as a NATO member is fulfilling this intention," the newspaper writes.
The Hungarian parliament reportedly passed the decision with 177 votes in favor and five against.

In March 2024 , Poland suspended its participation in the treaty.

The Treaty on Conventional Armed Forces in Europe was negotiated and concluded during the last years of the Cold War and set comprehensive limits on key categories of conventional military equipment in Europe (from the Atlantic to the Urals ) and ordered the destruction of surplus weapons.
