Police reported that "the suspected attacker fatally wounded six people before being shot dead by an officer.

At a press conference, Assistant Commissioner Anthony Cook said that the attacker acted alone, and that it is not yet known what the possible motives of the attack were.

According to police, several people were sent to the hospital in critical or serious condition. Among the victims is a nine-month-old baby.

A spokesperson for the New South Wales Ambulance Service said that at least eight patients were taken to various hospitals across the Sydney region as a result of the attack.
