Two Belarusians stole 40 NATO-style assault rifles from a freight train in Germany to sell them on the darknet, but were arrested by police after a sting operation.

German police have detained two Belarusians who stole boxes of weapons and wanted to sell them on the darknet. This was reported by the Bild newspaper, UNN reports.

Criminals from Belarus stole 40 NATO-style assault rifles from a freight train in Germany with the intention of selling them on the darknet. The Chinese-made rifles were initially shipped by sea to the port of Hamburg, where they were loaded onto a train on March 16 for transportation to a warehouse in Bavaria.

They reportedly took advantage of a moment when the train was temporarily unattended in Lower Saxony. In order to steal boxes of semi-automatic rifles, similar to American M16s, from the train without being noticed, the perpetrators waited until nightfall and buried the weapons near the train's stop, disguising the place with piles of dog feces, expecting no one to check the contents out of disgust.

A specially trained federal police dog was able to locate the cache by smelling the gloves left behind by the thieves near the crime scene. The boxes with the rifles were found, and by this time the thieves were no longer in the country, as they were confident that they would be able to sell the weapons via the darknet.

However, the police were able to outsmart the criminals. They put the empty boxes back in the cache, filled it up again, and when the thieves returned a few weeks later to pick up the weapons, they were detained. Two Belarusians aged 30 and 45 fell into the trap. They were placed in a pre-trial detention center, but refused to testify.
